Week 21 The start of the planking

The bits we received

And what we did with them

This week sees the start of the planking.  Some nice straight bits to give you an easy introduction to the fine art of planking hulls.  I did 2 straight planks against each bit of ply.  I.e. Side and bottom.  This left a nice a tapered gap a little less than 3 planks wide.  To get the right taper on the remaining planks, first mark the positions of the frames on each plank.  Then measure gap at each frame.  Divide the measurement by 3, and that is how wide the plank needs to be at each frame.  Trim the planks with a very sharp knife and glue them in place.

The planks should be held in place at each frame by one of the nails you got in issue 19.  Where the plank is very narrow, use masking tape instead.

Hot tip of the week

Don't worry about gaps - they can easily be filled later.  Also, don't worry if the planking looks a little rough and even.  This can be rectified by the use of sandpaper and filler.
